5 Lessons from Famous Feminists You Can Apply to Your Career
5 Lessons from Famous Feminists You Can Apply to Yur Career Feminist theory has a storied history tzu siche was second-wave feminism until second-wave feminism turned into third-wave feminism and third-wave feminism turned into fourth-wave feminism. Today, feministtheology has evolved even more, but the womens movement mucksmuschenstill has a lot of work before civil rights are equal for everyone. My 13-year-old son proudly wears a patch on his jacket that says This is what a feminist looks like. He understands feminism without the fear that women can sometimes hold, and hes an advocate of equal rights to men for every female he knows. To him, feminism is gender equality. Its liberation for every woman. Its civil rights for men and women alike. He doesnt carry the baggage that we do, the deep-seated fear of not being likeable, of being called bossy or being labeled as someone who is hard to work with. Hes just all about womens empowerment without the hassle that every woman has to put up with in regards to the feminist movement. You may be the kind of feminist who claims the title and practices the feminist theory you learned all about when you studied womens studies and womens suffrage in college. You even read The Feminine Mystique, maybe even joined some woman suffrage association, can recite all the famous feminist lines from third-wave feminism and really get down on International Womens Day. Or you may be the kind who says, Im not a feminist, (and claims to be against radical feminism because its just so radical), but then goes out there and acts like one anyway by totally living out feminist theology. Some of us like belonging to a community of women or men or people on the gender spectrum who shout loudly for equal rights (or for the feminist movement, in particular). And some of us just like to show respect to our mothers on International Womens Day. You may go about your business, vote for what you believe in (like things to improve womens health) and ma ke changes in your own life that matter to gender equality and liberation, but mostly matter to you whether or not youre afemale.Whatever the case, here are five shareable lessons onwomens empowerment from a famous list of feminists that you can apply to your life and your career right away, regardless of what type of feminist you are (or arent). The lessons for this list of feminists are for men and women alike.Lesson 1 Advocate for yourself.Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani advocate for educating women, started by advocating for herself. Then Malala Yousafzai saw the power of education, that it could change the lives ofallpeople, and stood up for those who did not have access to education in her country under the Taliban. How can this help you?Women are often more motivated when were advocating for others. Its easier to ask to educateall girlsthan it is to ask to educateone, when that one isyou. Or to march for the rights ofall womenthan to ask for a raise foryou.Ways to take actionDont wait to be offered a high profile project or assignment or promotion. Ask. leid sure what to say? Get a script atMelissaHereford.com. Once you create your own script, practice it 25 times out loud before you deliver it. When yousaywords out loud the delivery is sometimes different than when you justthinkthemLesson 2 Ignore the naysayers. Hillary Clinton, one of the most famous and most harshly criticized feminists ever, wisely said, Take criticism seriously, but not personally. If there is truth or merit in the criticism, try to learn from it. Otherwise, let it roll right off you.How can this help you?People will criticize you. Theyll tell you that youre too aggressive, too bossy, that you have an edge. Listen to their criticism and then make a conscious choice about whether or not its valid.Ways to take actionAsk for the opinions of people you trust, people who know you and have worked with you. Take their opinions seriously. Never take one opinion as fact. My last boss told me that I couldnt write. I was destroyed by that criticism for a while, until I took my own advice and asked for feedback on my writing.Lesson 3 You can be authentic and successful. Oprah Winfrey is Americas first black multi-billionaire, and she always happens to be a black feminist. But if you ask her fans what we love about her, its not her money or even her success that we admire the most. We love her for her ability to authentically connect with people, her honest conversations about the things that matter most to us.These traits are often frowned on at work. Women who are interested, collaborative and ask questions are often called weak or indecisive. How can this help you?Oprah is a black feminist who has showed us that her way of being genuine and authentic and curious can work, too. You can be different and true to yourself and still succeed, even if you dont fit perfectly into the norms of your workplace.Ways to take actionBuild rapport with anyone by starting with the ir WHY, the whats in it for them. When you help other people, youll build rapport, trust and long-lasting relationships. But dont forget to look out for your own needs. Mutually beneficial relationships are your goal, so go back to 1 on this list and ask for what you want tooLesson 4 Pave a new road without a map.Eleanor Rooseveltwas the first First Lady to do more than merely entertain in the White House. She held press conferences, wrote a daily newspaper column, spoke at a National Party Convention, and was an advocate for feminism before the term existed. How can this help you?Despite the expected obligations of any job or position, your personality and beliefs can help shape and expand the role you have into the role you want. If you have an idea about how to make a project better, dont let the confines of your job hold you back.Ways to take actionMany women suffer from immobilizing imposter syndrome. We criticize ourselves in ways we would never criticize our friends or co-work ers. You might not speak up because youre the least experienced person in the room. If you have an idea, you might tell yourself, It must not be a good idea or someone else would have thought of it. Instead, think about what you would tell your best friend. Youd probably encourage her to speak up, to share her ideas.Lesson 5 What you wear matters.Michelle Obama used her clothes to send a clear message I am one of you. Yes, she wore all the famous designers, but she also shopped at J.Crew, Talbots, Target and the Gap. How can this help you?Every outfit is like a uniform. Dress for the occasion. Like firefighters in their fireproof gear, doctors in their white coats, and police officers in their blues, choose what you wear to convey a message about who you are. When you see someone in a uniform, your brain shortcuts to who they are and what they do. Use this tool as your own shortcut for the people you want to influence.Ways to take actionGoing to a corporate meeting? Your uniform is a suit. Going to a cocktail party? Your uniform is something fancy. Going to a weekly meeting? Your uniform should mirror the person who is in the job youwant, not the job youhave. The bottom line...When you act for one, you act for all. These lessons from famous feminists can help you take the next step forward in your career and create social change. You dont need to have studied womens studies in college to be a feminist. Every time you speak up, ask for what you want, find ways to ignore the naysayers, learn to communicate in ways that build authentic connections, treat yourself as well as you treat others and learn to use your outward appearance as a tool, you are advancing yourself and other women at work.--Melissa Hereford is a negotiation expert who will teach you to respond clearly, calmly, and effectively so you can get more of what you want, all while building stronger relationships. What is an intrapreneur and is it right for you
What is an intrapreneur and is it right for youWhat is an intrapreneur and is it right for youTrue or false everyone is an entrepreneur, wants to be an entrepreneur or knows an entrepreneur. Its an accurate statement if you ask Michael Dermer career expert, and founder and CEO The Lonely Entrepreneur. Even if this is the case, not everyone is the next Mark Zuckerberg or Arianna Huffington. And not every forward-thinker wants to create a mega-company that challenges industry standards or propels dramatic, disruptive change. Rather, there is a sweet spot for every self-starter, and many are finding it as an intrapreneur.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThis new term is becoming trendy, and inspiring many not-so-new companies to consider hiring someone to come in and shake, rattle and roll their fundamentals. If youve read this term in a headline or two, but youre not sure of what it entails, heres what you need to know. So, what is an intrapreneur? Most of the time, new companies start with very little but big ideas a lot of grit. On the other hand, household brands that have made their stake in the world have plenty of income - but lack creativity. An intrapreneur is where these two players meet.Imagine if you had the visions of an entrepreneur and the capital and resources of a large organization. In its perfect form, this is the intrapreneur, Dermer shares. It is someone that works within a larger organization who is charged with coming up with innovative ideas to help the firms business.By definition, an entrepreneur has a big, spanking, incredible, new idea. No matter if its a product, a service, an app, a community, a place or something else entirely - its killer and it needs to be known. However, going out on a limb isnt always a reality for everyone, and it prompts some who are naturally idea-driven to use their knack for revolution in a different way. Many individuals need the security of a large organization with a stable salary and health benefits. But they also want to explore their vision, Dermer continues. This combination of creativity without the risk is incredibly appealing to an individual who can explore their entrepreneurial side without the strain of the entrepreneurial journey. The benefits of becoming an intrapreneurIt is no easy task to pitch a role that doesnt exist (yet) - but thats where the genius of an intrapreneur comes into play. Because you can see the forest beyond the trees, so to speak, creating a case study for why your services are needed can convince many brands to invest in your talent. This might mean going to a major media company and explaining how they could win big by developing a different part of their business. Or to an app thats doing something within the field of what youre dreaming up - but you can do it better. Once you can sign up a client (or perhaps, a few) - youll find plenty of resourcesExploration - sans riskMost of the time when you hear about someone going into business for themselves, its usually a heroic tale of how they gave everything up to try and make a wave. Though you still need bravery to market yourself as an intrapreneur, your finances might not take as much of a hit.As Dermer puts it, intrapreneurs can explore their ideas without the risk of investing in their own venture. Instead, a brand puts their money on you - and youre under the gun to deliver.Access to resources and capitalMany entrepreneurs have great ideas but lack the capital and resources to bring them to life, Dermer shares. However, when an intrapreneur joins an already fully-fledged company, they have every chance to take the ability of the resources available to them. Instead of investing, say, $40K in a website that sinks to be an SEO competitor within a niche, you can use the already-staffed writers and content published to start off strong.Even access to workspaces, other great minds and the luxury of time are perks. In some organizations, larger innovation infrastructure exists that creates incubators which find internal ideas and help to germinate them. All of these resources accelerate the advancement of ideas, Dermer adds.LearningLast - but definitely not least - one of the biggest advantages of becoming an intrapreneur is the ability to learn. Even if you are given the opportunity to change the way a company is conducting business, handling their internal politics or exploring an area for growth, you arent alone in the process. Most of the time, intrapreneurs work across multiple teams and sectors of a company, giving you the chance to learn - in real time - how to platzset priorities, build budgets, mentor and manage people, and much more, according to Dermer.Larger organizations can support ideas in a way that enables intrapreneurs to advance not only their ideas but their skills as an entrepreneur, he adds. How do you know if an intrapreneur career is right for you?If youre reading along and nodding your head - perhaps you werent born an entrepreneur, but rather, an internal visionary. Dermer says to make this a valuable career choice, you should have these certain characteristicsYou have ideas but are not the type of risk-taker that would go out on their own.You may be a risk taker, but you dont have the financial resources to take the risk of being an entrepreneur.Your family situation such as supporting a husband, wife and/or kids would prevent you from going out on your own.You love bringing ideas to life but find much more joy in the ideation than the execution.Even if it still seems a little far-fetched right now, but Dermer predicts in the not-so-distant future, itll be a career title. After all, gigs pop up all the time - remember when social media manager seemed crazy? Youre the intrapreneur, so go on and make a title for yourself. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you ha ppyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to network without feeling like youre doing it
How to network without feeling like youre doing itHow to network without feeling like youre doing itHeres an easy way to turn dreaded employment networking into deadly effective bondingWhen youre networking, ask for a reference, elend a job.Whether youre doing catch-up drinks or grabbing lunch to reconnect, your primary need is to get an ally, not a tally of job listings. Recruiting a helping hand to your search is your goal.So dont ask your college friend if she knows of any jobs for people like you. How would she?And dont ask your boss from two jobs ago if she has the names of any people who are currently looking to hire somebody like you. It puts her on the spot. Uncomfortably. No, instead, ask for a reference. Mention that youre going to be moving on, or youre already looking, or that youre actively out on the street. Let them know the type of positions you are and are not suited for, and what youre hoping to achieve in your next opportunity. And then ask them if when it gets to t hat happy place in your search if it would be OK to use them as a reference.By not putting them on the spot about specific job openings, you reduce the awkwardness inherent in the networking conversation. And by letting them know that you hold them in high enough esteem to potentially use them as a reference, youre actually paying them a compliment.Youre also making it easier for them to say yes, and to feel good about themselves for being a good friend and helping you out with a little favor. All of which means that you have a new buddy in your search one whos going to be thinking about keeping an eye out for new opportunities and an ear open for fresh possibilities for their reference-able friend you.Its wins and grins all around. Now, this doesnt work for just any old person you meet on the street. Theres probably a pretty good match between people youd take to lunch and those you could ask to be a reference. So my advice would be to stick to asking those you know well enough.Bein g realistic, the widely offered and deeply wrong advice from the past decade that you should try to extract favors, concessions, names, jobs, and career assistance from people youve only met over the phone is not only useless, it can be counterproductive to your aims by antagonizing your broader network.By making your networking about compliments, youll find it pays dividends.Good luck in the search this week
