The Ethics of Magazine Photo Manipulation in the Media
The Ethics of Magazine Photo Manipulation in the Media The Ethics of Magazine Photo Manipulation in the Media Photograph control can give your magazine a sensational, innovative, and provocative visual lift that can produce higher deals. That is the reason its enticing to change photos to expand their capacity to get eyeballs. In any case, contention can regularly result, which can exact long haul harm if perusers feel tricked. Choose whether you will permit photograph control so you can maintain a strategic distance from moral issues later by following the morals of magazine photograph control. Straightforward Photo Manipulation is Acceptable It would be simple for a magazine editorial manager to preclude photograph control. However, when the red-eye is expelled from someones photograph, the picture is modified. Perusers will acknowledge fixing defects, for example, adjusting hues or lighting. All things considered, that is the thing that the vast majority of them do with their photos before they have them printed. Shooting clearly or changing a shading photograph to seem highly contrasting are in fact controlling reality. Since no misdirection is included, this imaginative method won't raise moral concerns. Unflattering Photos Sometimes Need Help On the off chance that youre a supervisor auditing photographs from a Hollywood function, youll be quick to put an exceptional entertainer on your spread. In any case, in the best photo that catches her soul and style, you recognize a minuscule bit of spinach in her teeth. Your aim isnt to call attention to that the rich and renowned have indistinguishable imperfections from all of us. So you choose to help your celebrity out and expel the green spot in her enthusiastic grin. Nobody will be the more astute except if another person distributes the genuine photo and youre set up as a when correlation. That is exactly what occurred in 1997 when Newsweek improved the grin of Bobbi McCaughey, whod stood out as truly newsworthy subsequent to bringing forth septuplets. Inconvenience is, rival Time left her teeth with no guarantees. Their dueling covers made it known which magazine was performing computerized dentistry as a demonstration of photograph control. That is the reason you ought to choose how far youll go in helping somebody look better. Will you eradicate facial flaws and obscure a keeps an eye on razor stubble? Shouldn't something be said about wrinkles? Everybody on your staff should know the constraints of restorative final details or probably youll have 80-year-elderly people men looking like Ryan Seacrest when somebody becomes overly energetic. Choose Why Youre Using an Unflattering Photograph Newsweek confronted political warmth for its spread photograph of 2012 Presidential applicant Michele Bachmann that some said made her look excessively extreme, nearly crazed. The magazine attempted to safeguard itself by indicating different photographs of her with comparable outward appearances. The photograph went with an article named, The Queen of Rage, so demonstrating Bachmann embracing a baby wouldnt have associated the picture to the story. Newsweek restrained itself from adding smoke or demon horns to come to its meaningful conclusion. Magazines are under no commitment to utilize just pre-affirmed magnificence shots on their spreads. Editors ought to choose if a photograph will finish a litmus assessment of decency by inquiring as to whether individuals were caught in a brief unflattering second like mid-sniffle or if this is a genuine portrayal of them. Make certain to Treat Everyone Fairly In the 2008 Presidential political decision, a new Barack Obama was facing a tried and true John McCain. Set up their photographs on a spread and perusers could expect youre offering a political expression on the off chance that one looks better than the other. That is the reason one next to the other photographs, particularly in a political setting, must be picked cautiously. On account of Obama versus McCain, an inappropriate mix could make McCain show up older. Then again, an alternate blend say of McCain in a suit before an American banner close to the more slender Obama outside in his shirtsleeves may make Obama appear to be excessively young and unpracticed. Study the photographs to decide their capacity to be utilized close to one another. In the event that one up-and-comer is presented in an official battle photo, ensure the other one is in a similar setting. Put them both in suits or show them both shaking hands except if you have a convincing publication motivation to show a differentiation. Uncover Any Photo Manipulation Expelling food particles or improving grins might be performed with good motives, yet now and again photographs are upgraded for progressively sketchy intentions. Time and Newsweek had another spread shot faceoff when O.J. Simpson was captured in 1994. The two magazines utilized his mug shot on their spreads. Be that as it may, the Time photograph demonstrated Simpsons skin discernibly darker, which had pundits saying that the magazine needed him to show up progressively vile. Some even said racial predisposition was behind the change. Skin tone is a tricky issue for media pundits. Beyonce Knowles was impacted for showing up in a manner shoot with lighter skin, while ESPN The Magazine was booed when it exhibited how NFL quarterback Michael Vick may look as a caucasian. Turning skin dim additionally presents issues, particularly when the individual is white. That is the thing that happened when a British paper gave visitor editorial manager Giorgio Armani the opportunity to show Kate Moss with dark skin to feature the necessities of Africa. In these cases, the expectation wasnt to misdirect on the grounds that the changes were so self-evident. Be that as it may, editors of the magazines wouldve been insightful to incorporate a segment disclosing their masterful decisions to stay away from allegations of racial lack of care. Set a Photo Policy for Your Art Department There are endless approaches to fall into difficulty with perusers by settling on wild choices on photograph control. Since you cannot police your craft offices each brushstroke, its better to set a plainly characterized arrangement, particularly when your magazine permits a visitor editorial manager to make major decisions for an issue. Make rules for when a photograph is intended to reflect reality-like the outcome of 9/11-or if should make work of art. For instance, indicating President Obama with eight hands, each shuffling a significant issue like the military or the economy isnt intended to pass on that he resembles an octopus. Name a senior photograph manager to favor flawed photographs. That boss would have the position to approve wrinkle decrease or tooth brightening. Anything past that ought to get the consideration of more elevated level officials. Theres nothing amiss with distributing a disputable photograph, yet everybody ought to be prepared for conceivable backfire and have a clarification for their dynamic.

Eight ways to tackle gender inequality at work
Eight ways to tackle gender inequality at work The Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) has profiled eight organisations using smart strategies to create greater equality between women and men in their workplaces. WGEA Director Libby Lyons said employers were increasingly aware of the strong business case for improving gender equality in the workplace and looking for ways to create lasting change. âSometimes it is hard for employers to know where to start,â said Ms Lyons. âWe know that employers are very interested in effective strategies to address key challenges like pay equity, workforce segregation and womenâs leadership representation. We hope these inspiring stories will generate ideas and drive change.â Challenges and solutions Fact: 80% of care workers are women and by 2050 the current workforce of 350,000 needs to triple. Benetas is actively challenging stereotypes around men working in healthcare and is using flexibility and primary carerâs leave as a recruiting drawcard to get men into healthcare. In 2015 it introduced superannuation payments for all staff on paid parental leave to help ease the financial pressure of taking time out of the workforce for women and men. Fact: The national gender pay gap is currently 16%. One contributing factor is the difficulty for women who work part-time in accessing career development opportunities. HESTAâS pay gap analysis led to an overhaul of company processes and initiated a raft of actions that have helped increase the equality of access to career development opportunities within the company. This includes making sure that part-timers receive the same budget for training and development as full-timers. Fact: Only 16% of CEOs and 27% of Key Management Personnel in Australia are women. Griffith University developed a leadership program to identify potential and build capability of existing female employees. The first two-year program resulted in 10 promotions for women. Fact: By 2030 there will be a shortfall of nurses of 123,000. Currently only 1 in 10 nurses are male. Mercy Health is working to recruit more young males as carers and nurses to help redress the unbalanced gender mix in the industry and prepare for the increasing demand for healthcare workers as the population ages. Fact: Women make up only 27.8% of the ICT workforce in Australia. MYOBâs 16-week in-house DevelopHer program successfully trained three women who had no previous experience of IT to a level where they were offered a job in a development team. With a shortage of female graduates in IT, the company hopes this innovative âreturnshipâ model will be extended across the industry. Fact: Flexibility is linked to improved gender equality outcomes by assisting employees to manage work and caring responsibilities. 16% of organisations reporting to WGEA have a flexible working strategy and 52% have a flexible working policy. NAB has developed a self-service, flexible working intranet site where employees can manage their formal or informal flexible working arrangements directly with their manager, ranging from part-time and remote working, to job share and transition to retirement. Fact: Mining is Australiaâs most male-dominated industry; 84% of employees are men. St Barbaraâs strategy of target-setting, supported by regular monitoring, measuring and reporting to the executive has helped increase female recruitment and achieved a 100% return-to-work rate after parental leave. Fact: 48% of Australian organisations offer paid primary carerâs leave, 5.1% offer on-site childcare and 3.1% offer subsidised childcare. Stockland has developed a strong program to support parents and carers, to attract and retain employees. Initiatives include building on-site childcare, expanding the range of parental leave benefits and strongly promoting primary carerâs leave to male employees. She showed me how to do enlightening meetings to discover and get these sorts of positions. Because of her recommendation, I got a breathtaking line of work â" and one that was rarely posted â" in under two months.Today, I run Mac's List, an occupation board in the Pacific Northwest. I'm glad for the worth this administration offers our bosses and perusers. Is your company treating you fairly - Copeland Coaching
Is your company treating you fairly If you ask an employer why their employee quit, they often say pay. The person found a better deal somewhere else. But, if you ask the employee the same question, pay is rarely the reason. Its certainly at the top of their list for the new company they want to work for. But, its rarely the real reason they left their old company. As you know, a big reason employees leave is they feel treated unfairly. This brings the question, What is fair? At a government job (including the military), whats fair can feel more obvious. Pay is a known quantity because pay scales are public information. Promotions and raises are typically scheduled. In this type of job, its unlikely you will wake up one day to learn that your peer is making significantly more money than you, or has been awarded more vacation. In a corporate job however, this isnt the case at all. Im the biggest advocate for the job seeker, so dont get me wrong. But, things work differently in this world. Whats fair often doesnt matter. Pay is based on things like how well you negotiated. It may be based on your previous salary history. It could even be based on the college you attended. It isnt necessarily based on the following: The quality of your work How senior you are How much money you saved the organization How smart you are Essentially, fair is what youre willing to accept. And, once youre in the door with a company, they arent obligated to pay you more just because youre a superstar. Its upsetting, I know. It can make you angry. It can make you want to scream. But, in the corporate world, you are your advocate. Youre the one who must convince your company and your boss that youre valuable. Getting the most money is a game. Its one you have to play. And, you have to play it on the front end. Dont expect future raises to be more than 2-6% annually once youre at a company. So, what should you do when you wake up one day to realize that your peers are making more than you? You could kick and scream. You could quit. There are laws about this stuff, RIGHT? Yes, you could. And, if youre truly being mistreated, I dont want to discourage you from seeking help. But, think about where you want to put your energy. If your company doesnt respect you enough to pay you what youre worth today, what difference will it make if they pay you more tomorrow? Youll still be in the same unfortunate situation, with a boss who is unlikely to recognize your talents or encourage your growth. If you learn that youre being treated unfairly, my suggestion is to start looking for someone who will treat you fairly. Search for a company that values you. Find a boss that will promote you, and be your advocate. Stop focusing on the past and start looking toward the future. But, whatever you do, dont quit your current job (if you can help it). I know its awful. I know you hate being there. I get it; you hate your boss. But, if you quit, you will forever have to explain what happened, and why you have a gap on your resume. Youll forever have to explain that you were underappreciated and underpaid. Other people may even assume that you were fired. Crazy, right? Its something we dont think about when we make the choice to quit, but hiring managers will wonder what happened. If you are being treated unfairly, Im terribly sorry. Its the absolute worst feeling in the world. Hang in there, and refocus your energy on what you can control YOUR FUTURE. In no time, youll find someone who will truly appreciate you! So, Tell Me, Whats Your Dream Job - Freesumes
So, Tell Me, Whats Your Dream Job So, Tell Me, Whats Your Dream Job? You have prepared yourself well for your upcoming job interview. You have done some background information on the company you are applying to. You have rehearsed your answers to the most commonly asked interview questions. You have practiced your smiling and body language in the mirror to make sure that you hold a good posture and come across as friendly and engaging. Yes â" you are primed and ready to take on your job interview with ease and grace..or so you think! You enter the interview room and make yourself comfortable. Your interviewer looks up with a broad smile and asks âSo, tell me. Whats your dream job?âImmediately you start to feel a little flummoxed. You think to yourself, wait, she wasnt supposed to ask me this. How am I supposed to answer that question? and you dont quite know how best to respond. You see, the last thing you want to do here is to blurt out that this job you are applying for is your perfect job. Letâs take a look at the reasons why.You know tha t whatever you are going to say now is going to be judged. If you are applying for an entry level job within a company and you tell your interviewer that this is your dream job, will that not make you look like you have no aspirations or ambition to push your career further within that company? Will the interviewer think that you are only interested in doing the job for the money without ever wanting to engage with the business and help to improve efficiency and productivity? An employer isnt going to be interested in investing their time and training into you if they believe that you may not be around for the long-term or want to become an active member of the company. An entry level job is just that â" its entry level. Most employers will expect you to want career progression and would be more inclined to employ someone with a little drive and ambition to move up the ladder. How to answer the question â" without answering the questionThink about your skills and how you want to use them. Explain that your dream job would be one where you can put your skills to good use. Share your interests and values and how your skills will help you in your work. This is a great way to turn the question on its head and help to sell your skills to the interviewer. You can show how your skills and knowledge fit with the company ethos and overall future direction.Use the question to show your interviewer what you are good at. Should this question come up at a later stage of your interview, and you have already gone into a bit of detail about your skills, experience and knowledge, use this as an opportunity to re-iterate and re-confirm those skills. Talk about which skills you enjoy using the most and the ones you would like to develop further thorough training or practical experience through work. Emphasize that your dream job would almost certainly involve using these skills. Talk about your interests and values and what motivated you to want to work in this industry. This is another good opportunity to tie in your abilities and talents with the company culture or beliefs. Talk about what keeps you engaged in this line of work and again â" emphasize that your dream job would be to work within this sector because of your shared values.Add complexity to your answerAssuming that your own values and career goals align with the company ethos and culture, you can add in more complexity to your response. After talking about your skills and motivations, you can use this as an opportunity to bring the focus back around to the company to demonstrate that you share aligned views and have the perfect mindset to match with the company. For example, you could say something like:âWell, ideally speaking, my dream job would involve me using my best skills to help enhance the company. It would be a position that would allow me to grow and deepen my core values as this is important to me. I am pleased to see that this company also share the same values, and this is why I am so excited to be interviewing for this job today.âYou may notice from all of the above information that there was no mention of a specific job title. Businesses are often in a constant state of growth and reorganization, so although you may have looked at the company structure and have set your eyes on a particular role to aim for, in three or five years time who knows if that role will still be in existence?Try not to answer this question with an actual job title. This could risk you being pigeon-holed into a certain type of job or only offered one route of advancement. A job that looks appealing to you today may not look quite as attractive a couple of years down the line. If there are other opportunities available that are worth your consideration in the future, you dont want your boss or line manager to overlook you because they believe you have a different career goal in mind. previous article

From Civil Service to Charity
From Civil Service to Charity Success Story > From: Job To: Startup From Civil Service to Charity âCourage, like fear, is infectious. If you surround yourself with positive people, you can achieve almost anything.â * From Civil Service to Charity After ten years' service in the army, Olly Church was discharged following an injury and quickly began to feel stifled in the Civil Service. He realised that there must be other ex-servicepeople longing to use their skills in meaningful work, so he co-founded a charity to help them to do so. This is his story. What work were you doing previously? Working for the Civil Service. Prior to that I had been in the Army for ten years and was medically discharged having been injured in Afghanistan. What are you doing now? Establishing a charity that trains veterans to become international disaster response operators, exploiting their values and skills for the benefit of others. Why did you change? I missed all the good aspects of the Army, such as teamwork, camaraderie and a sense of purpose. I felt like a small cog within a large bureaucracy and unable to fulfil my potential. I also started to suffer the long-term effects of minor brain damage I had sustained following my injury and the intellectual demands of my job became too much. I knew that I had to take some decisive action in order to protect my health and achieve my ambitions. When was the moment you decided to make the change? I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown; depression had been caused by the blast to my head. I was out walking one day and had an epiphany. I knew that, if I had the support of my family, I had nothing to lose. Are you happy with the change? Yesâ" I still have the occasional wobble but I would never go back to the way things were. What do you miss and what don't you miss? I miss very little and certainly don't miss the health issues that my previous job caused. How did you go about making the shift? I resigned immediately and began to work up a plan of the practical measures. The more I told people about my plans, the more I had to live up to. I had made some ambitious but achievable expectations to realise. How did you handle your finances to make your change possible? I was in the fortunate position of having a small medical pension that I could rely on to survive whilst making things work. After six months, I am about to make a modest monthly income but I have realised that the quality of life and style of working I have adopted are worth more than money. What was the most difficult thing about changing? Taking the initial leap of faith; since I did that, most things have fallen into place. What help did you get? The most important was the faith my wife has had in me to make it work. I also have been mentored by my new boss who has followed a similar path and come through on top. What have you learnt in the process? I feel enlightened in the respect that, having come from an extremely institutionalised existence, life and work can be dictated by you and that there are ways of existing that don't have to be totally directed by external forces. What do you wish you'd done differently? Been more patient. I am only now realising that this is a long-term project and that it is worth taking the time now to get it right for the future. What would you advise others to do in the same situation? Be bold and choose your associates carefully. Be open and honest and people will see the potential in you and your plans. What resources would you recommend to others? Careershifters was a source of inspirationâ" seeing that other people were brave enough to take that leap of faith. Courage, like fear, is infectious and if you surround yourself with positive people, you can achieve almost anything. Tips to Writing a Good Resume
Tips to Writing a Good ResumeIf you are in need of ways to write a good resume, you are in luck. After all, in this economy we are all looking for ways to make more money. So, what is it that makes resumes so important?First of all, a good resume is an essential part of the search for jobs. This is your first impression of you. It's not your resume that shows up on job boards or recruiters but how you present yourself on your resume. This makes all the difference between getting hired and not getting hired. So, here are a few steps to writing a good resume.Step One: Take time to write your resume. You want to make sure you give a good first impression. Think about this. How many people have you met who immediately penciled you into the wrong mold?Step Two: Try to write your resume as clearly as possible. Try to make it as easy to read as possible. When you see a resume with a lot of busy writing, know that it might be a little difficult to understand. You will have to read it a coupl e of times and then try to decipher exactly what is written. Because if you do not follow the directions you will lose the attention of your potential employer.Step Three: Try to figure out the details of the position that you are applying for. If possible you want to see whether or not that position is the one that you would like to apply for. A good place to start is by looking at the job description. If the description seems hard to understand, chances are that the position that you are looking for has not been defined and this is something that will play into the next step.Step Four: Make sure that your resume is organized. When Goal Setting Goes Wrong
When Goal Setting Goes Wrong Beyond just every New Yearâs Eve, theres a constant drumbeat to set goals. Thats meant to encourage us to adopt a goal-setting mindset of to avoid past failure and achieve desired objectives in the coming years. But striving for a goal is not always beneficial, from an ethical perspective. Without vigilance, goal setting can go very wrong. . Arizona State Universityâs Assistant Professor of Management David Welsh and Lisa Ordonez of the University of Arizona reviewed 50 years of research showing that setting goals may have unintended negative results. Of course, the findings indicate that many companies and institutions use goals as motivators to focus energy on a desired outcome. The surprising finding was that the presence of goals actually increases the likelihood of unethical behavior. . âWhere does one draw the boundary line?â says Welsh. âThinking of new ways to serve customers is great, but thinking creatively about getting around the rules of accounting is not.â Accordingly, Welsh emphasizes the need to use creativity within context. For example, brainstorming when it is appropriate and avoiding a mindset of moral justification. . Creativity, too, is something you should reconsider in terms of the context. Managers and individuals need to develop greater awareness of the dark side of creativity. Its a pitfall that can be used to justify unethical behavior, such as finding legal loopholes, hiding accounting truths or avoiding compliance violations. In addition, companies must understand that employees who are left unchecked may descend the ethical slippery slope. In the end, staying on the right ethical path is all about mindset, says Welsh. But Welsh has offered some guidelines to help you steer clear of danger. To avoid ethical pitfalls: Maintain and cultivate a prevention-focused mindset and business culture. Encourage ethical behavior. Ask employees to be vigilant in identifying financial mistakes rather than being creative in trying to find financial loopholes. Establish and, most importantly, enforce a code of ethics. Address questionable employee conduct to reduce escalation of issues over time. Demonstrate ethical behavior as a leader by setting the tone from the top. Consider the negative ethical, emotional and performance-related effects of goal setting. Watch for unintended consequences associated with goal-oriented reward systems and pay for performance programs. Remember that even the smallest ethical transgression, if left unchecked, may snowball into larger problems over time. And, of course, that can lead one down the unforgiving slippery slope. Setting goals is part of your life, and in particular your business life. But the goals should never become more important than maintaining ethical behavior. By using these common-sense guidelines, you can achieve your goals and maintain your honor. Not to mention stay out of jail! Images: Slippery slope Helen K Ethics Louisa-Chan

Optimal Nighttime Routine To Ensure Youre Energized In The Morning CareerMetis.com
Optimal Nighttime Routine To Ensure Youâre Energized In The Morning There are countless distractions that get in the way of a restful night of sleep such as your cell phone, daunting work priorities, or even a faulty mattress. Implementing a regular nighttime routine will help eliminate those distractions, and get you on your way to a higher-quality rest.According to the experts, an adult should get an average of 7-9 hours of sleep every night in order to function efficiently, and accurately.evalIf you arenât getting the recommended amount of rest, consider incorporating a bedtime routine into your nightly schedule. Not only does a bedtime routine give your body and mind the chance to wind down for the night, but it also makes you feel more relaxed so you fall asleep easily and be ready to take on the day when you wake up.More Sleep Leads To Higher ProductivityHave you ever shown up to work after getting a measly four or five hours of sleep the night before? Most people have, and by default, have unknowingly contributed to the $411 billion of econo mic lossesthe United States sustains every year from lost productivity due to a lack of sleep.Sleep deprivation can lead to sluggishness, poor memory retention, and a slower response time. Believe it or not, those who are under the influence of alcohol have a 50% higher response time and complete tasks more efficiently than somebody trying to function on little sleep.Additionally, peoplewho get 7-8 hours of sleep per night are 20% more productive than those who only get 5-6.Naturally, in the business world, higher productivity usually results in higher pay. In fact, a study done by Matthew Gibson Jeffrey Shrader from the Department of Economics at Williams College showed an increase in short term pay by 1.5% and a 4.9% increase in the long term for individuals who slept an hour longer at night. Now, whatâs one of the best ways to get that extra hour of sleep so you can maximize your output and salary? You guessed it â" a nightly bedtime routine.8 Steps For Your Nighttime Routineev alYou probably have a morning routine to perk you up and get you ready for the 8+ hour day ahead. Apply that same logic to a nighttime routine â" but instead, it calms you down and prepares you for the following 7+ hours youâll spend asleep in your bed.Simply add a few of the steps listed below to your current teeth brushing and face washing nighttime routine so you feel refreshed and fully energized the morning after. There is no telling how long your personal routine should be. It could take 45 minutes, or it could take an hour and a half. It all depends on you, and how long it takes for you to feel relaxed enough to fall asleep.Step 1: Turn Off Your Electronic DevicesevalIf weâre going to mention distractions, we need to talk about your electronics because theyâre undoubtedly one of the guiltiest parties when it comes to sleep disruption.evalThe constant buzzing from work emails, texts, and social media notifications keep your brain on high alert, making it harder for your mind to distinguish when itâs time to fall asleep. The blue light that emanates from electronic devices like your phone and television also plays a role in hindering you from your beauty rest because it disrupts your circadian rhythm, the bodily process that influences your sleep-wake cycle. To prevent your electronics from keeping you awake at night, unplug your television and keep your phone away from your bedside table. As hard as it may be, try to stay away from electronics in the hour and a half leading up to bedtime. Out of sight, out of mind.Step 2: Make Sure Your Mattress Isnât The ProblemA poor mattress is one of the leading causes of tossing and turning. Even if your bed is only three years old and it still looks good-as-new, it may not be suitable for your body and sleeper type. For example, those who predominantly sleep on their back and stomach generally feel more comfortable on firmer mattressesbecause they support their spine and keep it from sagging into the bed.O n the flip side, side sleepers need something softer so they get adequate pressure relief for their hips and shoulders. If youâre not in the position to afford a brand new mattress, try looking for a soft or firm mattress topper to make it feel more accommodating.Of course, an old mattress can contribute to poor sleep as well. A saggy mattress or one with permanent body impressions can lead to an aching back or pains in your side, which is obviously unproductive for somebody trying to get a full 7-9 hours of sleep.Step 3: Consider Bedtime Yoga And MeditationEven if you donât practice yogaor meditation during the day, there are gentle yoga poses you can do at night to stretch your muscles and ease your mind before bed. For one, yoga promotes mindfulness which contributes to a happier state of mind, allowing you to approach your workday with a positive attitude where you can reach your full productivity potential. Itâll also help loosen up your joints and muscles so your body fe els more relaxed and ready to enter sleep mode.According to the National Sleep Foundation, additional health benefits of nighttime meditation include decreased blood pressure, and can even help soothe anxiety and depression. This makes meditation a helpful tool for those who suffer from pre-work jitters or anxiety the night before a big day on the job.Step 4: Play Relaxing SoundsHow susceptible are you to sounds? Have you ever felt immediately relaxed by the sound of the crashing waves during a day at the beach? Or, do you leave your window open during summer nights so you can listen to the sound of bustling trees or chirping crickets? If so, you might benefit from using a sound machine. The soothing sounds from the machine help lull you to sleep, and it can aid in drowning out unwanted noises, like for those who live in an apartment complex with barking dogs or noisy neighbors. A sound machine can also help individuals with the opposite problem, those who are bothered by completely silent environments.evalIf youâre more prone to relaxing music, you can certainly play sounds from that instead of a sound machine. Just make sure you arenât breaking the âno electronicsâ tip. Hook your phone up to a speaker and let it run through an easy-listening playlist, or put on a calming vinyl record.evalStep 5: Start Writing In A JournalInsomnia can be a huge deterrent from the full nightâs sleep we need to wake up feeling well-rested.One of the most common causes of insomnia is anxiety, and if your anxiety stems from work-related responsibilities, journal writing might be a good option for you. Itâs easy to let stress related to workoverwhelm your thoughts when youâre laying in bed at night, stuck in your own head.So writing down tomorrowâs work tasks is a good way to free those anxious thoughts from your mind and onto a piece of paper, especially if thereâs nothing you can about it at 10:00 p.m..Not only will you be super prepared for work the next day, b ut thereâs something about writing goals or tasks down on paper that makes you more likely to do them.evalStep 6: Have A Set Bedtime Every NightLittle kids arenât the only ones who benefit from a strict bedtime. Referring back to the circadian rhythm concept we discussed earlier, having a set bedtime supports your bodyâs natural sleep-wake cycle. In other words, if adults make a habit of going to bed around the same time each night, their body will begin to recognize when it should start winding down for sleep.Letâs say you have to wake up for work at 7 a.m. to get to work by eight, you should set your bedtime to about 11:00. That way, when 10:00 p.m. comes around, youâll start feeling sleepy and the thought of bed begins to sound really nice.Step 7: Keep Work Out Of The BedroomThis tip is directed towards the workaholics who work past the clock and bring their work home with them, and the people whose office is their home.If you donât differentiate your sleeping space fr om your workspace, your brain wonât know whether it should signal you to go to sleep or finish up that proposal you have due in a week.Experts say the bedroom should be strictly reserved for two things; sleeping and sex. So there should be no checking work emails or adding finishing touches to a presentation on your laptop while youâre in bed.Step 8: Adjust Your Bedroomâs TemperatureYou want to ensure your environment is accommodating for sleep, and this includes bedroom temperature. You donât want your room to be too hot or cold or else you risk sleep disruption. You probably know what weâre talking about, when you wake up in the middle of the night damp from your own sweat, or feeling like your toes have turned into little icicles. Then, itâs always a toss-up how long itâll take to get back to bed once you eventually do fix your temperature problem. This can be harmful if youâre trying to wake up fully rested in the morning. So to prevent overheating or getting too cold, set your temperature to something in between 65-73 degrees, which is considered to be the ideal sleeping temperature among professionals.
